its for fun man, like all games. you kill a bunch of animals with bazooka and sh*t :D for example if you are on the bus you can play it to bust time ;)

I believe wormux still needs you to name a team "AI-stupid" in order to make it computer driven- so you don't have to fight against yourself if no friend is available to play XD
(I believe they will fix that in the next version though)
hint: if you like the genre try hedgewars (.org) also, it's free as well (but more similar to the "worms" games) and runs on mac / windows / linux (and iphone soon)
