I was a deputy sheriff in riverside county California, and investigated this crash. I too am a helicopter pilot. This happened at Rubidoux airport in souther california. The person who crashed was student. He bought the helicopter and had about three hours of instruction.  The instructor went to lunch. When at lunch, the new owner thought he would just practice some hovering... obviously not a good idea. ouch.. I origionally put this VHS tape in evidence in downtown Riverside.

@roro879 No, you don't increase RPM to take off.You increase the angle of attack of rotor blades to increase the lift.RPM of helicopter stays relatively same during flight no matter it is in hovering, taking off or landing...
