[Aaron] We're here at OMS Portland with DJ. Um DJ can you do a quick self introduction and then tell us what you actually presented on today.
[DJ] A quick self introduction, something that I've never been good at, uh as a very verbose person. So I am the Director of Community at Blue Sky Factory. We are an email service provider based in Baltimore and my role as Community Manager is to manage all of our online presence, so I manage the Twitter account Facebook, LinkedIn and do a lot with our blog as well.
[Aaron] All the fun stuff yeah?
[DJ] I think so.
[Aaron] Cool. So you would give a session today and for all those unlucky folks that couldn't make it here to OMS Portland, what are the top two or three things that would have been the takeaways from your session?
[DJ] So the session was email marketing as the digital glue so I talked about email marketing and social media. I think the biggest takeaway is first of all is that you are starting to see more and more people combine email and social.
[Aaron] Yeah.
[DJ] But they are they're not giving me any reason why I should follow. So you see a lot of times people will say follow me on Facebook or friend me on Facebook, follow me on Twitter. My question always is why.
[Aaron] So why do people follow you on Twitter?
[DJ] Well I think the first thing is just like with email. You have to provide something of value.
[Aaron] Yeah.
[DJ] So you have to provide some kind of valuable content and you have to keep it personal to. You know too often you know people are very robotic like and saying.
[Aaron] No one wants a corporate offer like that.
[DJ] Yeah be human and I think um and to me that's a big takeaway. You can have that conversation in social and you can also have a conversation in email if you are doing it correctly.
[Aaron] Yeah gotcha. Speaking of personal, DJ shared some of the top things that he likes in his life so it made me think about the question right? So you have a dog correct?
[DJ} Yup.
[Aaron] And you enjoy the libation we call beer.
[DJ] Yeah . Coffee.
[Aaron] Yeah if one were to be taken away from you, which one would you have to choose that that would never to be seen again?
[DJ] Wait it would be dog or beer?
[Aaron] Your dog or beer.
[DJ] Oh man!
[Aaron] Notice the long pause The long thought. Sorry Fluffy. Ha ha ha ha.
[DJ] Morocco I love you but Beer. I couldn't live without beer. I mean I like beer, I like a good beer. I love my dog, but beer.
[Aaron] Beer is every day.
[DJ] I'm glad you didn't ask me wife or beer or baby or beer.
[Aaron] Yeah we won't even go there, we won't even go there. So um last but not least the question I always ask everybody is, you've been through a half day here at OMS, what is the coolest thing you've seen so far?
[DJ] Um well I sat in on the Facebook session and you and I were actually just talking about this and I think that the thing that is fascinating to me is that you know you can always learn something from every presentation and you know I manage our Facebook page, so I should know everything there is to know about Facebook and you know a few things I learned here today is just some of the differences between fan pages and groups and administrators and uh the woman that presented just really knew, you know really has been looking in Facebook for Intel and um I thought that it was interesting about some of the things she talked about as far as posting just a couple of times a day or asking questions, or she even said talking about human, she said once in a while its ok to ask something that is not related to your business. Just ask about the World Cup or what's ever going on, so I think that is very consistent when you talk about email and social.
[Aaron]Yup, there you have it. Live from OMS Portland. DJ thank you.
[DJ] Thank you.
