That's understandable, but it's not like it works the reverse in western countries. I mean, in australia, good luck if someone actually speaks a little bit of any language other than english. I dunno, I'm the same as you, if I'm going to a foreign country I don't expect people to speak english to me, I'm visiting their country, I should be making efforts to learn their language. It is super great though that in japan there are english signs (kanji is difficult for me)

I wouldn't of course, but tourists would likely do so. There was just a report in the local newspaper with information taken from a survey from foreign tourists. Basically, it reported that tourists felt that restaurants and hotels were generally unprepared for simple communication in English. This coming from Shizuoka, home to Mt. Fuji and F1 racing. Tourists from overseas should expect at least rudimentary English in major tourist spots, one would think

18 years now in Japan. Mika's level of English is far better than that of the average woman of her age. She can convey a sequence of events and her pronunciation is actually decent. If you think her English isn't good, well come to Japan and enjoy the culture shock. You'll be lucky if the waitress can even take an order from you.
