This documentary portrays the current censorship issues happening in the smallest EU State of Malta. In this first part, we took on two issues; the banning of the Scottish play STITCHING that was produced for the Maltese stage by local company UNIFAUN. We interviewed Chris Gatt (The Director), Adrian Buckle (The Producer) and Michael Zammit Maempel (the Lawyer) just after they lost the court case UNIFAUN had against the censors of the Film & Stage Classification Board in June 2010. This ban sparked various views not only locally but internationally too.

This part ends with the beginning of Mark Camilleri's story. This Post Graduate student is facing various charges in the civil courts of Malta after publishing an 'obscene' story of a chauvinist character. The story is written as a personal account and sparked various outcries not only in Malta, but also overseas. Mark's story is very interesting, especially when the police where involved by the Rector of the University of Malta. The story in question is 'Li Tkisser Sewwi' and it was printed on Mark's student journal 'Ir-Realta'. This immiedately was banned from campus claiming that the story was discriminatory against women, obscene and pornographic and since pornography is illegal in Malta, Mark can be sentenced from 3 to 6 months imprisonment.

  • Wait wait wait why aren't plays allowed to have naughty swears or naughtier sexual tones in them but you can still watch and buy films and TV shows with the same content?

  • Great job guys!

  • Making a parody of someone who discriminates against women, is literally the opposite of discrimination.

  • we are not stupid people, we can handle sex and murder being shown in a production or written in a book. what does the censorship board have that the maltese people don't, that makes them able to handle the things that are censored? i'm terribly offended. we don't need no one to tell us what we can and cannot handle, we don't need anybody to decide for us, these people treat us as if we were idiots. again i'm extremely offended.

  • You're too generous in your criticism of the court's decision. The real truth is that the verdict is STUPID!
