The Carter family can trace their lineage to the state of Mississippi primarily central Mississippi. Some members of the family migrated to the industrialized northern and mid-western states in search of better opportunities. They traveled and eventually settled in states such as Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Kansas and Wisconsin. This period in American history was called, "The Great Migration" which lasted from 1940 to 1970. Although the family can be found in just about every state in the union, the above states are where you find the majority of family members.
