This is one of my first deep-zoom series, calculated back in 2001. Now I just remade the video and added sound for better quality. Max iteration count at the final images are a bit over 2,000,000. Calculation time now would be about 6800 hours on a 1 GHz Athlon TB. In 2001 it was longer because an earlier version of GNU-MP was used.

The programs are written in C using the GNU-MP library for the "deep" parts of the zoom. The output is a series of .jpg or .ppm images. I now use mencoder to make an .avi file and then ffmpeg to add the audio track.

The process is as follows: First an "explorer" like program is used to select the zoom-in point, then an other program is used to calculate the images up to that point. For both these programs the calculations can be split on many computers on a network. This is the part that takes the longest time to run. When this is completed an interpolator program calculates all the intermediate images and add color, motion blur etc. The output from this program is the image series then fed to the video encoder.
