Detailed description precedes the video, but generally what I did, as with my North Star time-lapse showing star trails, I set up my camera on a tripod up on Mauna Kea on a recent trip to Hawaii. I was around 19 degrees latitude north and so was able to capture stars much lower than can be seen from the Northeast looking at the south sky. (Omega Centauri was easily naked eye and was much higher before I began taking photos.) The odd flickerings are some differences in exposures and also passing car head and tail lights illuminating the area. Enjoy - another one showing the setting sun and moving clouds BELOW the telescope domes coming soon!

  • Thank you. I am not a professional astronomer, and certainly not a paid one. An expensive amateur hobby is more like it. I'll check yours out.

Also I have a second time-lapse I need to make from the same night on the mountain. I photographed the setting sun and moving clouds below some of the domes and peaks. Just never got around to it!

  • What is it like to see that? It almost looks scary. As a city boy I never see more that 15 stars at night

  • Thank u so very much

  • Very nice clips buddy! I will be heading to the dominican shortly (19 degrees also) and Im just curious which direction you are facing, and what time of year this was. I made myself a planosphere to try and capture the milky way as you did, but it cant hurt to ask.

  • quality photography mate !

how did u manage to do the moving star trails ?

  • The image at the beginning (dark sky Milky Way) is amazing. Thanks 4 sharing!

  • Nice. Are you an astronomer? I started a similar time-lapse project and I take these kinds of images whenever I visit the mountain. If you want to check it out it's on youtube as well. Good job and keep it up!

  • WOW bro that is fuckin amazing i cannot believe you can see that with the naked eye from the earth with no telescope... thats on my bucket lists to see something like that
