Whatever you do, take it easy, be persistent but patient, relax and enjoy.
I used to do this regularly every single day over a couple of years, then got lazy, gave up for a couple of months and after trying it again realized that I've lost not much but some of the flexibility and tried to force the exercise (feet tucked in, thighs to the floor)...
Anyways, I did the exercise but later I experienced sharp and sudden pain in the hip area.
Hollowdusk... YOur dancer was incorrect. It will not deform your foot. Starting with touching the ankle is a good idea until that is easy and then when you are more flexible holding the toes or foot is appropriate. BTW, most all stretching forms come from Yoga and not from dancers. Take care of your body.
Very nice session. Looks like it would be very good for mobility. Just one point however. In the groin stretch when you have your feet together in front of you, it is much better to hold onto the ankles instead of the feet or toes, as shown here, as with repeated grabbing and stretching of the foot as show here can actually deform the foot. This i was told by a dancer and when it comes to stretching they are experts

Took me some time to recover.
Be careful.
