Yes it was briefly, I believe this was to do with an experemental 3 speed gearbox that the vehicle was fitted with. Whilst I am not 100% sure why it transferred, it was a Cork bus for a while, the other historians can confirm this
-
Wasn't DF838 a Cork bus in CIE days?
-
brings a tear to me eye

When we hear DF838 starting up, we hear a whining noise after afew seconds, when the engine is revved. It doesn't sound different from a Leyland 0.680 engine. What was the deep whining noise?

That whine comes from the hydraulic pump which drives the radiator fan, I think the Leyland engines had shaft driven cooling fan but the Daf were hydraulic.

Bombardier KD and GAC KC on average 15 years front line service, some KC went on a few years more as school buses. Yes a lot of the Shannon built KR type did indeed last 20 years, they had a chassis under them and were a sturdy bus. Bus Eireann have a 20 year rule whereby no school bus they operate to be older than 20 years.
