This episode is a first in a series of tutorials on how to roast coffee at home. This week I demonstrate how to (and not to) roast green coffee beans in an air popper, typically used for popcorn. Save money and drink better coffee!

  • Good video....I enjoyed it. I also use a popcorn popper to roast coffee beans...in fact, mine looks identical. I bought mine at Target for $16 a "Chefmate." I use the handle of a long wooden spoon to stir my beans every 1.5 minutes throughout the roast...the friction helps release the chaff and the long handle keeps your fingers from burning. I stop the roast after I hear lots of beans popping during the second pop. No real need to preheat the popcorn popper.

  • Thanks for the comment Mark! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, this was my first go at home roasting. I agree that stirring the beans during the process helps to rid the beans of the chaff and ensures that they are rotating properly. Preheating isn't necessary, no. Take care!

  • 4 minutes for first crack?! I get first crack about 2 minutes with my machine... plus at 3:14 you hear first crack in your vid as you mention it, because if you goto the tutorial at sweet marias they are already getting second crack at about 4:30-5 minutes in already

  • Thermodynamically, roasting in a popper is counter-intuitive; a greater qty roasts faster than a smaller qty; more beans restricts airflow & increases the temperature. I roast 4.5 oz vol-3.5 oz weight. This qty will stop spinning and heave up as the beans crack and expand. Try more beans for greater uniformity, without stirring. At room temp.my roasts take 4 min +/- 10 sec; first crack at 2-2.5 minutes At beginning of 2nd crack. I dump the roast into an iron pan & yield 3oz for 3 presses.
