  • Hi! I enjoyed your analyses, find it very useful. I must ask you something... Do you know anything about Caravaggio's technique with mirror. I would like to know how to use that, but don't know position of mirror and so on.. on YT is one video- caravaggio technique, but I don't understand everything. So if you know something, or you know where can I find details about that, please tell me. Thanks!!!

  • I saw the Caravaggio technique video. They believe he used a concave mirror to reflect the image of a still life or model onto the wall (upside down and backwards) in order to see the chiaro-scuro effects for which he is famous. I don't believe they suggest Caravaggio traced the image, but rather was able to see things as they really appear instead of in a conventional way. You would need a concave mirror to achieve this effect, one that is round and bends inward like a bowl.

  • Well,I don't know where can I find that mirror, but I have an idea to made camera obscura of one room-one half with reflector to light up object I paint, and other(totaly dark)with upside down reflection.Of course,in the middle I would put some curtain with hole..But I'm pretty sure Caravaggio did this very often to draw conture(on that way or another)and so did Vermeer(with his Grail geometry). They don't have any drawing,I have never seen any(maybe one or two).Isn't it strange? regards and thanks

  • You are right, I don't know of any drawings by Caravaggio except for a self portrait, for which I am sure he used a mirror...

  • woww nice work!

  • Thank you!

  • You have a very good sense of form and shape in your painting, particularly in your middle baroque painting. From what I could see close up, the muscle tone and shades in oils is very good. Thank you. Paul.
