When we first meet Pip he is a young boy who loves in a small house with Mrs.Joe who is his sister and her boyfriend Joe the blacksmith. He is visiting the Grave yard which is in the middle of the marshes where his parents are buried. Inside the Grave yard it is given a very dead gothic feel, apart from the fact that Pip is walking in a area full of dead people. Dickens describes it as a 'distant savage lair' and 'a small bundle of shivers growing afraid of it' this shows that this is a very dark imprisoning place where even the plants are scared of growing, this sets a very death like scene. Then the convict appears, there is a large of influcnce of imprisonment in this bit as dickens describes Pips first meeting with the convict, the convict is wearing 'coarse gray, 'a great iron on his leg'. This shows from his apperance that he has been imprisoned by something. Then the convict starts speaking too Pip, he starts on with hints of canabalissm ad he tells Pip about how he has 'fat cheeks' as he licks his lips. This shows that this man is so desparte too eat that he is willing too eat a child.

The themes of death, decay and imprisonment surround Miss. Havisham, Estella and Satis house, they are like a magnet too the subject, First Miss.Havisham. She has imprisoned herself as she admits too Pip, "are you scared of a womean that hasn't seen the light of day since the day you were born?" this shows that she is mentally imprisoned soo much that she is physically imprisoning herself in Satis house with the past and the memories of her life, such as her wedding causing all the clocks too stop at the same time. I also noticed that when she watches Pip and Estella playing cards she shows almost Vamperic side too her as she enjoys watching Pip play cards. When we first meet her she is in a 'well lighted room with large candles lighting it' and 'no glimpse of sunlight had been seen in it'. Pip develops miss. Haishams gothicness as he describes her as 'wax work', 'mummy', 'vamperic' and 'decay' linking her apperance with a decaying body. He uses such strong phrases because hes s just being straight about the matter.
