CHEN:
During the Vietnam War in March of 1968, U.S. soldiers wiped out an entire Vietnamese village. It came to be known as the My Lai Massacre. Last Sunday, hundreds of villagers, relatives, and survivors came to pay tribute to lives lost. Among the mourners, a former U.S. soldier.
STORY:
It was March 16th, 1968. The tiny hamlet of My Lai became the scene of a bloody massacre, that would help change the American public's attitude towards the Vietnam War.
It's now been forty years since around 500 unarmed, mainly women and children, were killed by U.S. soldiers.
Among those paying tribute, former American soldiers, and survivors.
[Truong Thi Le, Massacre Survivor]:
"I got some rice trees to lay on the dead people. There were five dead bodies laying on the ground - there was blood everywhere."
Former soldier Lawrence Colburn returned to My Lai for this 40th anniversary. He and helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson rescued some of the villagers as the massacre went on around them, loading people into their chopper and flying them to safety.
[Lawrence Colburn, Former U.S. Soldier]:
"No one wins in war, and civilians always suffer in war, and the only way to prevent atrocities in war is to prevent war."
The U.S. army had originally claimed My Lai was the scene of a battle with the Vietcong, in which just a handful of civilians were killed.
But photographs smuggled out by an army photographer revealed the truth to a horrified American public.

  • @VCthaGOATdunker the guys in charly company were, but no most most americans did'nt want to go to war and know plenty of veterans that who are disgusted with the hole thing.

  • William Cawley is the worst piece of shit that ever lived. A big disgrace to anyone who have worn the uniform and he should have been shot by a firing squad a long time ago.

  • why did usa massacer people in vietnam and korea?

  • @jiheeorama They'd had some casualties of their own, and that villiage had VC fighters. No excuse to massacre the entire village in revenge, the biggest crime was the U.S Government did nothing concrete in handing out punishment to soldiers who responsible, what a situation to be in, you're ordered to kill and you're a grunt? you can't call anyone to say what's going on you just have to do it, many wept as they fired on civillians, others shot themselves to get out of it.

  • How would you people feel towards the communists massacre of millions after their takeover in 1975 after we pulled out in 1973.Henry Kissingewr made the deal after we bombed them to the peace table in Paris so we could surrender to them..Don't they deserve recognition?Cambodia,South Vietnam, and Laos became a mass graveyard. The same powers that sent us to Vietnam also controlled the anti war movement over here. Now it's the Middle East.Governments will be toppled and something worse will takeover.

  • @ColDwight The Vietcong did all that and even more to THEIR OWN PEOPLE the ones they were supposedly fighting to protect but in reality they were torturing them. And I have no idea where you got the bayonet through a baby thing, thats just too much trouble for a soldier its easier to shoot than stab and thats what they did at My Lai. Plus I guess you didn't read the first part of my comment so I'll say it again. THEY WERE ALL MEDICALY INSANE AS IN THERE IS SOMETHING SERIOUSLY WRONG WITH THEM.

  • @StalkingRainbow its a civil war, and we went to a country and meddle with their affairs, so you can't make excuses about what they did and compare them to the Laos or Cambodia. You read the details about the massacre right, putting a bayonet through a baby, shooting a boy right in the back while running, cutting tongues & torture....etc..the list goes on.

  • I wondered if WO4 Armit tilgner was there who was an army chopper pilot.
