While catching fawns in Maryland for population research purposes, we learned that the buck fawns are the ones who cry like this- not a doe fawn!
DISCLAIMER: He is not being hurt in any way. They were getting a tick off his eye - it was not necessary. We just saw it had a tick on its eye, and attempted to remove it. It did no damage and would have been fine without us. Ticks drop off once they're full anyway. However, we did not harm the fawn either. And no, the doe does not disown the fawn. The doe leaves the fawn all day by itself because fawns do not have a scent (but the doe does) - therefore, they leave the fawn because it is less likely to be found by predators. The fawn stays still all day alone, unless something harmful gets too close (like tractors, coyotes, dogs, etc.). The doe comes back to the fawn before nightfall.
Here are some sources stating that fawns are not disowned by their mothers because of human scent.

  • Man, it must be boring for fawns if they spend all day sitting and not moving in a field waiting for their mom to come back from wherever she is.

  • Sounds almost like what I hear in my canyon for months each year. A little different- maybe I`m hearing the doe fawn...

  • I can't stop watching this!!!

  • Actually, the ticks can do them harm. Many fawns end up with rehabbers after being blinded by deer ticks attached to their eyes.

  • Sounds like a screaming kid calling for its mom...oh wait its is!!! Bahahahah. Nah but tick are bad, mkay? They carry lyme disease, and thats bad. And ticks are itchy, mkay, and thats bad.
