  • Aretha is still the greatest..Overall she still can`t be matched..Her voice isn`t in the best shape but she still stands above the rest..

  • Has anyone noticed how effortlessly she reaches notes when she sings GOSPEL? I find that interesting.

  • you know i always thought that same thing.

you can tell Eva studied at the Queen. Eva's vocal instrument is truly the only one that has the breadth and capacity to travel to any style of music. You only have to listen to Eva's 'Blues Alley' and witness how her gift can make up for the average standard of the band. Similar with Re's Live in Paris album.

Eva's Had I A Golden Thread is pure Re. I don't mean to say Eva immitates, NO her gift was far too great for that. Eva was Eva, Re is Re.

  • Aretha definitely has the recorded legacy! Ross and Nancy Wilson have nice portfolios too, in reguard to quite a few lps of good- to excellent quality.

I agree with your assessment of the other three divas output. Glady's quality stuff sropped after her first few Buddah lps. As much as she hated the Motown years, that was her most lasting period by far.

Aretha's Coumbia and some of her Arista work is first rate also. She has dozens of B+ to A

albums. Patti has about 3 or 4.

  • I agree - and as far as I'm concerned Patti's recording career never amounted to much. I would hardly consider "New Attitude" a classic. Chaka Khan's recording career is a little better and Gladys' was more substantial than Chaka's.

But no-one can touch Aretha's mighty records on Atlantic. She is a spectacular vocalist, singer and producer, her classic recordings are pristine and she always uses her voice in good taste.

  • Nice; I love that song. It's one of my favorites by her.

  • Aretha is an inspirational vocal queen and apart from eva cassidy no one can kiss this beautiful ladies boots. Thank god for such a beautiful gift to the world

  • Ree's voice is much better here than it was in the 2nd half of the 80s and the early 90s. During that period she gave the 5 worst shows I've ever seen by a professional musician. 13 years off smokes has made a big difference and she FLIES again. Her peerless Heart and Head more than make up for the aging but still impressive pipes. In LA 2006 she sang beyond my wildest expectations on EVERY song. Saw Galdys, Patti, and Chaka within the same 6mos and none of them touched Ree's show

  • I appreciate her flaws just like I appreciate what she used to sound like...I could care less that her pipes arent what they used to be, you're still hard pressed to find better singers out there. I would hope that someone doesnt have the balls to say that there are better singers out there than Aretha. I mean thats just sacreligious. Yea, I love Phyllis H, Patti and Chaka, more but Im not gonna say that they're all better than Aretha, capiche?...thats just silly.
