In september 2000 Pete Sampras lost the number 1 position, that was held then very briefly by Marat Safin.
With all the love that I have for Marat, he is NEVER going to be remembered as a better player compared to Pete!! Number 1 does not mean better player in general, in these cases (when a BIG ONE of this sport at the end of his carreer suffers the younger players). Roger is one of these cases.
Of course he is no longer n1, but NOW this has much less importance in his carreer.
Bjorn Borg was number one in the world, Between 1974 and 1981 he won 11 Grand Slam singles titles.
He was the best, just like Roger. He USED TO BE number one, but now while still possessing an extreme amount of talent and skill in tennis; is no longer number one.
I think: the level of tennis that he expressed and still expresses when he "can" (do you remember the semifinal of Roland Garros this year?) will be unparalleled "forever".
Andy Murray is one position ahead of him in the ranking (and SIX years younger!); can you really see him playing at the level Federer did for so many years? this is just impossible!!
simply amazing.
