Peep Show - Mark and the miracle of consumer capitalism

There are systems for a reason in this world. Economic stability, interest rates, growth. It's not all a conspiracy to 'keep you in little boxes' alright? It's only the miracle of consumer capitalism that means you're not lying in your own shit; dying at 43 with rotten teeth and a little pill with a chicken on it is not going to change that!

  • @beepandbop Cause those aren't left wing views, those are sane person views. Just cause someone is leftwing doesn't mean they don't belive in interest rates and such. The guy in the clip is a dirty hippie, not a liberal.

  • Its creepy when Mark is right..

  • damn, I was looking for this clip for a long time, thanks & cheers!

p.s. surprised David Mitchell, known for his left-wing attitudes, wrote this into the script.

  • These arent even hippies. They are scene kids/party jocks. Real people don't sit around damning the system. They usually do some useless protest to get their point across! ^^ Smoke weed every day!

  • Mate, you need to stop using generalizations. And plus, your reasoning is exactly what arrested slavers say every goddamn time. "These teenage girls kept in a basement for 3 months with minimal food & nowhere to pee never had it so good!"

"You need to come to terms with the world." Oh, honey, what the hell does that even mean?

  • Series 3, episode 5.

  • the answer is in a combination of the two systems like in canada, sweden, norway etc. it's the best we got.

  • Thanks gnomit, I understand your position better now. I'd suggest there's a rich legacy of socialist struggles that have combined economic equality and freedom. I disagree that the failure was inevitable (and therefore that the gap will always be there); I think in most cases - Russia, Spain, etc. - the true revolutionaries were killed. But the failure of those movements doesn't vindicate capitalism: it means we have to figure out how to fight for equality & freedom at the same time.

  • I didn't say perfect. Infact I said the world will never be perfect. I am fully aware of how people must suffer in other parts of the world to provide for the life we enjoy here. What I am saying is that is the way life is. Never will change. There will always be poor and rich and a big gap between. Socialism tries to fix that, and it ends up with more power in the hands of the rich, never in the hands of the people lke it is meant to because whoever takes control inevitably abuses their power.

  • I don't think a world where literally billions of people are starving is perfect. Some people in the global north benefit from capitalism - most don't. This isn't a conspiracy, and you don't have to put slavery in quotes - just go to the UNDP and check out some of the stats on human development. The freedom & prosperity of _some_ in the west comes at the price of the world's poor.
