Family, friends and Veterans of the Vietnam War are present to honor and pay final respects to SSgt. Jerald "Jack" Zallen as he is interred at the Ft. Benning Post Cemetery, Friday, December, 9, 2011.
Zallen served in B. Co., 1/7th Cavalry, First Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during the Battle of Ia Drang at LZ Xray in November 1965. Zallen was in the cutoff platoon which is written about in the book, "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young: Ia Drang --The Battle That Changed the War in Vietnam." And also the film based on the book titled, "We were soldiers." The book was written by Harold G. Moore and Joe Galloway.
To those of us who knew Jack he was a kind man and a brave one too. We were privileged to call him our friend and our brother.
We will miss him greatly.
