GENERAL HOSPITAL (1978-1993 Opening Sequence)

This is the beloved "Speeding Ambulance" opening to ABC's longest-running soap opera "General Hospital". This was used throughout the show's most memorable era during the late 70s, 80s, and early '90s

This has the distinction of being one of the longest running intros ever to a soap opera, having been used from 1975 to 1993. The 1975-78 version has the same opening, but the show title zooming all the way to fill the TV screen. This version, used from 1978 to 1993, is slightly more subdued as it "stops" at the border of the hospital.

My aunt told me when General Hospital came on, it was time to pick my cousin up from school. When the ambulance sounded and the music started, their dog Peppie would start barking and run to the door, She would take him with her.

This person is referring not to the theme music, but to this version of the visuals itself. The show's title began zooming out to this smaller size in 1978, after Gloria Monty took over as executive producer. (The 1975-78 version of these visuals had the title zoom out on the screen in a larger size.)

This theme had actually started being used in 1976, on Monday, July 26th of that year, not 1978.
