Most experienced detailers I know say a DA does a fine job but will not reach the look a competent detailer can get with a rotary. I have been using a DA for a while but I just bought a Makita 9227C rotary. I am going to a salvage yard to buy a hood or panel to practice on with my rotary this winter before I give my car a try. For anyone apprehensive about using a rotary, I recommend doing the same.
Stick with your PC, if you are not under time constraints there is little a rotary will give over a PC. In fact there are things a PC will do, like work on plastic that are far safer than with a rotary.

I have a banged up 99 chevy cavalier that I practiced rotary skills on.... Poor thing. I never did burn the paint though.

burning only happens when you stay on a spot for too long.

Rotary is faster and has more cutting ability. I save the PC for the wax application.
