Ever wonder about U2's connection to my hometown city of Toronto? Well U2 played the El Mocambo on December 09, 1980 in Toronto. http://www.u2tours.com/detail.src?ID=19801209. The venue still exists today. In 1981, U2 played the Maple Leaf Ballroom on March 11. http://www.u2tours.com/detail.src?ID=19810311 . The Maple Leaf Ballroom does not exist today and was located on 665 St. Clair Avenue West.
Here is the earliest clip I remember seeing as a kid of U2 in Toronto on City TV for the show "The New Music". Notice who the interviewer is? That's Jeanne Beker now of Fashion Television (FTV) fame.
The interview may have been done around the Ryerson show (there was a Country Style doughnuts across the street). Between the El Mocombo show and the Maple Leaf Ballroom show, U2 also played Ryerson Theatre between those two showdate on 1981-05-19

Maybe they were just regular jerks then, but it seems they came to believe the hype sometime after Joshua Tree. Interesting situation to be in, it must have huge difficulties. But you know... not everyone can make music at all let alone great music, and that makes them special, at least for that, and so we look up to it. Music does something special to us, especialy when there's sexual attraction involved as well. Just a few reflections this xmas morning...
