Good video boys. I think the idea an English pointer should only air scent is crap. Mine uses a combination of both when tracking running quail. In this case if the pheasant was to run out to the side the dog would have no idea where it was unless it frantically ran back and forth until it got downwind again, and there's a chance it would bump the bird early. To whoever said it's a pity he's ground scenting is wrong I believe. Lovely dog and well done on the pheasants.

great video be the quality not great but the dog is superb and great to see some homegrown hunting dogs on point.best of luck this season as far as i know it starts soon.may i ask where you are in the country?cheers

@ 11paulmm11 It is necessary first of all to differentiate the British breeds, Setters and English Pointers, of continental breeds, essentially German Shorthaired Pointers and Spaniels.German Shorthaired Pointers can hunt as well with the head up as track the nose on the ground long enough to go back up until the game as long as it will not be blocked.As for the Pointer, one of his characteristics is to hunt the high nose to get the direct scents of the game.

That most certainly was not good bird work. If there was a bird there, the dog should have made two casts and nailed it. This dog was just pointing the area, with no idea where exatly the bird was (if still there), not going in nailing the bird to serve it for the hunter.

What a pity!

At the beginning of the video, we can see the dog tracks the game nose on the ground whereas the English Pointer has always to seek the nose into the wind.
