The air pump to engage the 4WD went bad and wasn't providing enough pressure to keep the front differential engaged. Listen at the 37sec mark to hear the front diff slipping..

  • @3stagevtec Can you do a swap for live axle in front too like from a samurai or cherokee?

  • the air pump has 2 O rings inside of it and when they go bad, it can cause a loss of pressure which results in slipping..

check the suzuki-forums for info on it.

if your diff slips on dry hard surfaces, that is normal (and should be avoided), if it slips in muddy / slippery conditions, something is wrong somewhere.

  • Yes, i'm 100% sure it was the pump.. I know the system can bind up on dry surfaces OR when running large mud terrain tyres and cause the front diff to slip as well, but in the vid i posted, you saw how easily my diff was slipping, and it was barely under any load..

when i changed the pump (used replacement), i was able to run an entire trail without a single problem..

  • I have question 4 U. Did U fit new air pump and did this cure the diff slip? According to 4rms there are several causes for this, including weakness of construction which I find questionable. On 1 Australian 4rm it advocates this is normal by Suzuki,& says the pump only works at 5PSI which is low when U think about 4 wat its doing, if its not ment 2 B so, maybe Suzuki know its got to slip no matter what & have set the pressure low to limit wear and tear as a fail safe. Mine duz it occasionally.

  • No apologies necessary.. i was just passing on the right info..

you have to pay to off road in the UK, now that really sucks.. lol

  • I dont actually take min off road PURPOSEFULLY petrol too expensive and you invariably have to pay to do it legally in UK if you dont own land. However, just had 4-6 weeks of going to work in DEEP snow, will send you pics if you want (enclose email) your choice.

  • You are right and I am wrong! apolgies! the GV has a front diff, but dont labour your points! I do actually know about 4wd systems. In the past I`d been told(by a qualified mechanic) that the problem occurs because its not an active differential. So there you are Ive apologised.

  • check our 'differentials' on wikipedia to learn about the center differential, and 4WDs in general..

check out the new vid i uploaded 'brasso seco trinidad', you will get a better view of what my Vitara is capable of.. and post some vids of your too! i'd like to see it in action!
