Loudon breaths rare air as a songwriter that's for sure. I wouldn't sweat the fact that he hasn't achieved great commercial success. He has been very strong influence on other songwriters. His songs require too much of one's attention to be called pop music. It is a gift to come across his music.

@skipsing I passionately agree. One of the most brilliant, understated pieces of art about the attack, from yes, the criminally under-listened-to Loudon.

We saw Loudon sing this song at a concert in London only 2 weeks after the WTC disaster. It was typically subtle, and yet simple and personal. Now, 7 years on, it still seems to be the perfect commentary on an event which left everyone feeling helpless and, in some illogical way, guilty.

I knew loudon through knocked-up. I think he is better that his more famous son. grey in LA, swimming song and daughter are great music, really.

its great being among people who realize how great this guy is.Loudon should visit these
pages and realize how appreciated and loved he is. Its Like being in an exclusive club.
Pardon me for getting shmultzy, I think I got
everyone beat. Thirty Seven Years Now.

It's great to see more and more Loudon videos surfacing on youtube, he deserves the attention. One of the best songwriters around, from his early stuff right through to his new stuff for 'Knocked Up' - fantastic.
Remarkable song . . .still gives me chills all these years later

I would think the song would be more meaningful if you've ever been there and actually taken the ride...

If you're in SoCal in mid June there's a great opportunity to see two great songwriters in the same evening when LWIII and John Prine appear together in San Diego.

The criminally under-listened-to Loudon Wainwright, a native New Yorker and living in NYC on 9/11, wrote one of the most beautiful of all the many songs that event has inspired. I think this production was for Ted Koppel's Nightline TV show. Thanks Hackenbush1 for posting!
