I think the reason Lea Michelle's sold better has a lot to do with advertisement and commerce, not talent. Of course Glee's version sells better, it's way more popular, has a wider audience. Idina Menzel is one of the best singers in the whole world. Also, she doesn't portray Elphaba, she IS Elphaba

I always hated The Wizard Of Oz and when I read the book I finally figured out why I hated Dorothy so much

As was I (rooting for the Witch, that is). But, you must remember, Les Mis existed as a musical well before Wicked, so really, all Wicked did--if we go by what you say--is expand on the One Day More concept to create The Wizard and I, Popular, and Dancing Through Life.

Yes, I know that. I was rooting for the Witch long before it became trendy. I'm saying that this particular first act finale is the reason why I find Les Mis' first act finale to be an incredible cheat.

This is not from Les Mis at all. It's from Wicked, telling the story of The Wizard of Oz--taking ideas from both the Baum book and especially the MGM film--from the point of view of its "villain", The Wicked Witch of the West, now given the name Elphaba and a backstory involving her & Glinda as students of Shiz university who eventually grew into their established roles.

This musical is great on its own. Try NOT to associate it with either Wicked as a novel (as in it, Elphaba goes insane to become wicked for real before being melted [whereas the musical had the liquidation be staged to give Elphie the happy ending she was not designed to have as a tragic character], nevermind that Nessa is crippled in a different way & that Boq remains a munchkin while Nick Chopper is the Tin Man & Fiyero does NOT become the Scarecrow), the MGM film, or LFB's source book.

Hahahah.....No. The Wizard gave the governor of Munchkinland's unfaithful wife a drink of green liquid and had an affair with her, thus creating Elphaba. That's right folks, The Great and Powerful Humbug is father to The Wicked Witch of the West and had people kill her! Talk about horrible--or shall we say, "wicked"--parenting!
