Classic Game Room presents a CGRundertow review of Big Brain Academy from Nintendo for the Nintendo DS. Released in the middle of the most popular and innovative days of the Nintendo DS, Big Brain Academy came out right after Nintendo's other educational hit Brain Age. The similarities between the two go beyond the name on the box. They're both comprised of brain teasers, they both have a professorial guide and they both playfully measure your smarts. The difference isn't in what they're doing as much as it's in their tone. Big Brain Academy is kind of like Brain Age got mixed up with Wario Ware. You're not adding black and white numbers, you're adding cows and a sheep. So where Brain Age has the look of a newspaper, a deliberate style for its intended audience, Big Brain Academy has the look of a coloring book. This video review features video gameplay footage of Big Brain Academy for the Nintendo DS and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's Derek.

I had a Game Boy, GBC, GBA, Lynx, and a Game Gear. I like portable games. I was never able to get a DS or PSP, however. I got sick and that sapped all my (admittedly limited) resources for a long time. I'm still pulling myself out 6 years later. But now I'm trying to find a way to get a 3DS. I'm amazed by the hardware and I WANT THAT CONSOLE! I think I may get a used PSPgo as well at some point if I can't find a relatively cheap Vita. I will find a way to make this happen. Mark my words.

@pippo17173 Yes, and no, these games were released long ago, mostly for elementary schools.

@pippo17173 guess you are too young to have grown up with Mavis Becan, the Oregon Trail, and Math Blaster.

@pippo17173 I highly disagree, I think the possibilities for learning are tremendous... of course one might not consider them true "games". I can imagine learning languages, math, physics, or music theory to be really translatable on a gaming platform, I just don't think it's been done correctly yet. Honestly I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss this as a medium for learning.
