you basically wasted a bunch of abalone. all of it is edible. you can get a brush and just rub the black stuff off. no need to trim it off, its such a waste, especially if you cook it. I eat it raw and just wash it and brush off the black stuff. you work so hard to get an ab, its a shame to waste most of it by trimming down to that. but to each his own.

Wow...there goes 30% of the meat sliced right off to waste.

I've never tried it.. yet heard of it before ..

U cn also mince it... dice some onionz.... Fry the onion in butter once cooked chuck in paua(abalone) then wait about two minutes on high... Add cream enough to just cover it... Add salt pepper cook until its hot ( dont boil) then thicken with cornflour thats hw us maoriz eat it!!!!

@nugunslinger you are a fucking amateur!!! growing up in nz i have eaten thousands of these, and i have never ever wasted the same amount you've just shown... after shucking, the teeth and shit-bag should be the only waste, the rest is perfectly good for eating (including the black skin)... come to aotearoa and i'll show you how to dive, prepare and cook paua
-
@blumaiden it may... and it tastes just as good!

So what do you do with everything you cut off? I have head some people put that in soups and stews.
But I have used this method since I saw it and I feel its one of- if not the "ab"solute- easiest way to shuck these guys.
To those commenting on the cost of abalone: If you catch them yourself, the size limit is 7 inches for the longest shell diameter. Assuming this guy caught this ab himself (and didn't buy it illegally) this one is only about average sized. Farmed abalone tend to be about 3'' across and there is no longer a commercial fishery for wild caught abalone.
They're often prepared like and taste like calamari.

lol.. i caught them myself.. actually since i go diving all the time for it, i cant bring myself to buy it ..even when at a sushi place i always want to try different ways, but its so expensive and i tend to always have one in the freezer so eh...

i could and i am sure some people do too.. but before you go judging people answer me this.. when you get a hamburger do you eat the guts? the eyeballs? the testicles? or just the parts you like?

i used to take a wire brush to it and get all the black stuff off and eat every last bit, but those parts just arent that good compared to the rest of it, so what you didnt see is what i do with the rest of it. sometimes i throw it in my garden cause the guts and all that other stuff makes for great fertilizer.
sometimes, ill freeze some of it and then before i go fishing, pull it out night before, let it defrost and use it as bait.. im telling ya, its not just humans that love the taste of ab
