Penetration and expansion test using one-gallon jugs stuffed with wet newspaper. Four layers of denim also used; test gun was a Glock 22. Temperature during the test was 30-32 degrees, but the test jugs had been stored at room temperature for 4 1/2 days. I wanted to mention this based on the results.

Sometimes bullets will expand into a perfect mushroom, but there is also the chance they will not for whatever reason. I still believe this would be a cartridge to consider for concealed carry, in spite of the less-than-optimum results.

tnoutdoors9 any idea when you might retest this with your sim-test gel & denim?

Without reading all of the comments first, I just want to say what may have already been said. I don't think you're ever going to get perfect expansion in this type of test. To get it, you'd have to use ballistics gel. Because of the variety and inconsistency of the materials you're using, the bullet had no choice but to tumble and "key". There was also a chance the bullet could have "swam" out of your media. It appeared to be swimming to the left.

I've been getting great symmetrical expansion with other rounds. Also, I am dropping this format and will be using SIM-TEST ballistic media beginning late 2011. It is the closest thing I've seen to ballistic gel.

new jersey is the only state that limits use of hollow point ammo right? if you can load hollow point ammo at all, you can use ranger t's (regardless what it says on the box). they're just hard to find sometimes.

with the obvious time and effort you put in to making your videos, I wish you would use a better test medium. repeatedly penetrating a plastic barrier every 9-10" has to have a significant impact on expansion and penetration. still good info though. nice job.

So out of all the ammo you tested for self defense expansion, which would you choose?
