If you look at the live version done By Hunters And Collectors it is made a lot simpler by putting the Cappo on the 4th (as posted by roadofrarotonga )

and

F-Am-G verses 3 and 5

The problem with that is you don't get the nice sound with the muted strums but yes that is a much easier way for a beginner to play it.
