The new Toronto Rocket TR subway trains will be the first subway trains in North America to feature an open gangway, allowing passengers to walk from one end of the train to the other.

Some of the new technological features in this train include a variable message sign announcing the next station, a light up map, anti-microbial surfaces, emergency intercoms and security cameras.

Many of the train's style cues are borrowed from Hong Kong's MTR metro system.

The Toronto Rocket TR trains will operate solely on the Yonge-University-Spadina line. The 1996 T1 trains will operate solely on the Bloor-Danforth and Sheppard line, with some slotted in on the Yonge-University-Spadina line as well. The TR trains will end the operating lives of the 1974 H4, 1976 H5 and 1986 H6 trains. However, it should be noted the H6 trains will continue service in 2013 for LAMATA in Lagos, Nigeria.

  • The new trains are still pretty clean. I was on one and people are keeping it clean so far. The old ones too, I transferred in st. George where I was on the T1 pretty clean, and took the new ones. I must say, torontonians are clean freaks compared to other subways I have been on.

  • @yomamasapeach I have to disagree with you. When it comes to train interiors, Torontonians are filthy. When even NYC subway cars (not the stations) are cleaner than the TTC, it says something about Toronto

  • Atalanta01 go fuck yourself

  • I'm totally thrilled over this. You will be able to track the train on your cellphone and other devices like a laptop via the internet. I even suggested an I-phone App that shows the station map.

  • Goddamn I'm impressed, the interactive map with the led lights was my idea. I put two pieces of card board together with some lights on it showing the stations and I can't believe it, they actually used it!

  • I rode one of the new trains today. It seemed pretty cool, but it was super crowded, so I couldnt exactly get the best look at everything. I really dont get the point of the light up pegs on the maps though. I think you would have to be a moron, to not know where you are.

  • @VincentKim1215, I've come across a mix sort of TTC staff. Some are very pleasant, and some are just on their periods 24hrs (males included). One time it wasn't even crowded and the guy who closes the doors in the faces of my daughter and I. It was the most frustrating thing I've ever experienced with the TTC.

  • I'm a germophobe and I appreciate the ant-microbial shield. I didn't expect this from the TTC. They usually fail at everything. I rode these trains about twice. It's pretty neat. Now if we could just get more and more subways. I guess we have to stop ripping tax payers off and stop over funding the police first.

  • @ttcspot Yep, I went on the trains around friday evening, they do get dirty in the winter because of water and people leave lots of magazines but I have been on the paris, london and have seen the new york and they do get dirty as well, its all about the people rushing, plus not all the trains smell like piss.

  • sadly Toronto commuters have no longer made these trains a cleaner way of travelling. Some trains are even dirtier than the old H4 trains now.
