Joe: *grins* just use my initials: S.O.B *felt that Selena would get it*
It was still raining when Joes alarm buzzed at six. He slapped at it, opened his eyes to the gloom and considered doing what any sensible man did on a rainy morning, sleeping through it. But a few hours cozy oblivion didnt seem worth the smirk and snippy moments Selena would lay on him. He got out of bed, stumbled into the shower then dressed for the day.
Joe: *at the lobby thinking that Selena knew it would rain and had it all planned to pay him back for being a jerk*
At seven, riding on a caffeine-and sugar high, he felt nearly human. He dumped up enough energy to flirt with the desk clerk, then snagged one last doughnut for the road and headed out.
He spotted Selena immediately. She stood in the gloom, rain pattering on her bush-style hat, fog twisting around her boots and ankles as she spoke to a quarter of guests about their planned route for the morning.
Selena: *acknowledged Joe with a nod, then watched the group head off* you set?
Joe: yeah. Did you got my initials from the clerk? *teasing voice*
Selena: shut up. lets see. *stood back, skimmed her measuring glance up, then down, then up again* how long have those boots been out of the box, ace?
Joe: *thought in his mind: less than an hour* so I havent been hiking in a few years. Unless were planning on climbing the Matterhorn, Im up for it. Im in shape.
Selena: health-club shape *presses a finger against his flat belly* fancy health cub too. Wheres your water bottle?
Joe: *irritated by her and held out a hand, cupped it and let rain pool in his palm*
Selena: *shook her head* hold on a minute. *turned on her heel and headed back to the lodge*
Joe: *talking to himself* is it just me? Or does she browbeat everyone?
Selena: *arrived*
Joe: *grinning*
Selena: *held out a plastic water bottle and belt loop* you always take your own water. *nimbly hook the bottle to his belt*
Joe: *surprised* thanks. *blushed*
Selena: I had them charge it to your room.
Joe: no, I meant for the personal service. Mom.
Selena: *nearly smiled*
Joe: *caught the start of one in her eyes*
Selena: *shrugged*
Fog smoked along the ground, slid through the trees, tangled in the fronds of ferns. Rain pattered through it, a monotonous drum and plunk. The gloom thickened as they entered the forest, pressing downs as if it had weight and turning the fog into a ghost river.
Joe: god what a place. *felt suddenly small, eerily defenseless* cant you just see a clawed hand coming up out of the fog, grabbing your ankle and dragging you down? Youd have time for one short scream, and then the only sound would be--slurping.
Selena: oh, so youve heard about the Forest Feeder.
Joe: come on.
Selena: we lose an average of fifteen hikers a year. *lifted a shoulder in dismissal* we try to keep it quiet. Dont want to discourage tourists.
Joe: thats good. Thats very good.
Selena: that was easy. Very easy. *took out a flashlight, shined it straight up* the overstory here is comprised of Sitka spruce, western hemlock and western red cedar. Each is distinctive in the length of its needles, the shapes of its cones and, of course, the pattern of its back.
Joe: of course.
Selena: *ignores him* the trees, and the profusion of epiphytes, screen out the sunlight and cause the distinctive green twilight.
Joe: whats an epiphyte?
Selena: like a parasite. Life and death are constantly at work here. Even without the forest feeder. *switched off the light, pocketed it an continue her lecture as they walked*
Joe: *listened with half an ear* *heard a cracking sound from above and looked up in time to see a thick branch tumble down and crash to the forest floor* you wouldnt want to be under one of them , would you?
Selena: widow maker.
Joe: *glanced at the branch again* good thing for me were not married.
Selena: occasionally, the epiphytes absorb enough rain to weigh down the branch. Overburdened, it breaks. Down here---*stopped abruptly, held up a hand* quiet. *motioned for him to angle behind the wide column of spruce*
Joe: what?
Selena: *shook her head, pressed two fingers to his lips as if to seal them. She held them there for a long time*
Joe: *wondered how shell react if he started to nibble her fingers* *heard whatever had alerted her and laid a hand on her shoulder in a protective move and scanned through the trees and vines toward the sound of something large in motion and saw 15 enormous elk, their ranches like crowns* where are the girls?*talking against sels fingers*
Selena: *glared at him and watched the elk disappear through the shadows* the females travel in herds with younger males. Anyways, we can circle back if youve had enough.
Joe: I thought we were just getting started.
Selena: its your dime.
