  • @TurbulenceOfficial It is miles davis on the trumpet and in this song it is indeed Sadik Hakim (known then as Argonne Thornton) on the piano. on the rest of the songs from this session it's dizzy gillespie on the piano. dizzy does play the trumpet on the song koko from this session. source: ian carr - miles the definitive biography

  • Was gonna say I doubt it's Diz on piano!

  • I'm not alone in saying flawless great piano here!

  • Great recording, thanks for putting this up.

If i may, for this tune (and a couple of others - not the whole album), it's actually Dizzy on trumpet and Sadik Hakim on piano.

  • Thriving on a Riff released by Savoy was recorded in 1945. It was Charlie Parkers first recording with 19 year old Miles Davis. The same session also produced Billies Bounce and Now is the Time. At the end of the track they play the head which would later be known as Anthropology.

Referenced from Clawing at the Limits of Cool.

  • @607995 and @alexjrmarino

Bird didn't play trumpet. he just started playing alto horn, but changed to the saxophone later.

but Dizzy was pianist as well as trumpet-player, though he was best and most known for his trumpet-skills.

@saxation yeah it's anthropology without the head..;)

  • @alexjrmarino Bird also played trumpet on a few songs, mainly the fast ones that Miles didn't want to do.

  • yeah what's up with that?? interesting. So "thriving on a riff" is basically "anthropology" minus the initial head?

  • Dizzy on the piano.. ? :)
