Many gardeners disbud camellias to get bigger blooms and enough space around each flower so that each may open unhindered. Disbudding is suitable for camellias which open large, complex flowers and is not done on camellias where a profusion of many small flowers is desired. Disbudding is performed from September to November. To disbud camellias, remove some of the thick fat buds as desired, leaving the thin leaf buds. You'll want to leave about 2-4 inches between the remaining fat flower buds.
