The 3rd ID (M) commander, MG Buford Blount acting upon the suggestion of his 2nd BDE commander, Colonel Perkins, wisely decides to not clear Baghdad by slow, plodding dismounted infantry clearing buildings one or two at a time--instead using "thunder runs" to slice off segments of the city by tracked, armored, maneuver to seize control of key, governmental centers-of-gravity (COGs).

Baghdad International Airport was taken by the U.S. Army on April 3, 2003. Then the Thunder Runs begin to take the center of the city and to oust Saddam Huseein's government.

A lucky RPG round sets fire to a M1 Abrams heavy tank engine but the column cannot put the fire out; FIREFIGHTING M113 GAVINS should be organic to every Army Brigade Combat Team:

Meanwhile, the marines are hundreds of miles away still bogged down because their weak truck-mounted unit structures cannot shrug off enemy fires and keep moving.

Here's an U.S. Army Command & General Staff College School of Advanced Military Studies (SAMS) report by Infantry officer, Major William Sutey on the need for cross-country MOBILITY (XCM) from M113 Gavin light tracked tanks to improve LIGHT INFANTRY FORCE mobility, protection and firepower. READ IT.

  • this war is a shit, so we are taking revange for the 9/11 , it's ok

  • Sadly, true raghead hate was at a fever pitch in 2003 after no actual investigation had been done as to who actually did the 9/11 false flag attacks. I am concerned as a PROFESSIONAL about the competency of the U.S. Army and its force structure which is proven here must be ALL TRACKED. To be competent we need to be professional with CONSCIENCES; immoral wars could then be vetoed if sent on fool's errands.

  • You cant send Tanks alone into a city without infantry as support tanks looses almost all of its capabalities , sure it has a pysochological effect on enemy troops but a tanks alone are vulnerable.

  • You can and we DID send in tanks ahead of infantry and it worked because the Iraqis didn't have ATGMs. The onus here is on the light infantry narcissists following in the wake of the 3rd ID (M) to GET THEIR HOUSE IN ORDER and light air-mechanize with M113A4 Super Gavins so they will be THERE to clear out ATGMs etc. as a defacto CAVALRY. Wheeled trucks didn't cut it in 2003 and don't now or in the future.

  • Whats the title of this documentary?

  • @virulent01 What i dont get is why do the marines always say they go first if the Army was there too?? I'm not trying to start anything but how does it work?

  • @dynmicpara Thanks

  • I was with C 2-7 Infantry which was attached to 3-69 armor most of the war. Alot of this documentary is based on these units. Because these where the most forward units of the war. If anyone knows OBJ LIONS, OBJ PEACH, and the Charlie six bridge knows what i mean. Marines where to the east. We fought from Kuwait to Baghdad. Karbala to the taking the airport. Infantry, and tanks won that war. Along with an awsome air campaign. Everything working in unison, is unbeleivable.

  • No shortage of future heroes after seeing scenes like this. Nobody can beat America in conventional warfare today but because of that, her enemies will use more and more unconventional and covert wars. We see that already with 9/11, attacks and kidnappings on tourists and recent failed NYC Times Square car bomb.

    Freedom indeed!

  • Lol, where are the Marines at here? Oh, are they still a few days behind?

  • This was not an invasion based on 9/11....it was more of a catalyst that gave Bush the ability and freedom to pursue a personal vendetta based upon faulty intelligence. None the less....we should support our troops and recognize what they have done. 3rd ID has bore more than their fair share in Iraq and performed phenomenally! Rock of the Marne! Proud Dog-Faced soldiers!

  • FYI, the 3rd ID (M) was known as the 24th ID (M) during Operation Desert Storm/Shield. Ask for 24th ID (M) vets.
