The downward movement of the hand after the punch is actually supposed to be a block. This block (following the center line) is to be a powerful movement which along with the waist twist is used to help power the next straight punch with the opposite hand. This is not to say that you cannot block up or sideways with this punch. It is a block taught as a beginning technique along with the punch.

Any particular reason with your straight punches as to why you drop your hands as you center up? I practice White Crane as well, and we're taught to keep our fists at shoulder height to avoid an opponent jamming our arm down (among other reasons, of course)
