From KETC, Living St. Louis Producer Jim Kirchherr looks back at the history of St. Louis at the beginning of the 20th century—with the events that led up to the 1904 World's Fair. Great tension between the working class and upper class resulted in a transit strike. A month into the strike, there was a confrontation between the parade of strikers and the posse which fired into the crowd, killing three. The strike exposed deep divisions in the city. To ensure a sense of peace during the World's Fair, at a time when all eyes were on St. Louis, some transportation unions were recognized.
