THE GAZA STRIP- (Arabic: قطاع غزة‎ Qiṭāʿ Ġazza/Qita' Ghazzah) is the eastern part of the State of Palestine, and lies on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It borders Egypt on the south-west and Israel on the south, east and north. It is about 41 kilometers (25 mi) long, and between 6 and 12 kilometers (47.5 mi) wide, with a total area of 360 square kilometers (139 sq mi). The area is recognized internationally as part of the Palestinian territories.[1][2][3][4] Actual control of the area is in the hands of Hamas, an organization which won civil parliamentary Palestinian Authority elections in 2006 and took over the de facto government in the Gaza Strip from the Palestinian Authority by way of its own armed militia in July 2007, while violently removing the Palestinian Authority's security forces and civil servants from the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Strip was occupied by Egypt from 194867, and by Israel from 19672005. Pursuant to the Oslo Accords signed between Israel and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Israel maintains military control of the Gaza strip's airspace,some of the land borders (others are under Egyptian control) and territorial waters.

The territory takes its name from Gaza, its main city. It has about 1.4 million Palestinian residents.[5] Most are either refugees or descended from refugees of the Palestinian exodus.
