This is how you trigger the compass. It is not calibration. To calibrate it would be to tune its accuracy. If your compass doesn't work check the that is is turned on in settings (pre version 3). If you have the new V.3 just tap the compass on-screen then move as shown here to activate it. Accuracy is OK but not great.

very true..this is why i gave back my N97..it was lagging all time. BROKEN out of BOX. requires FIRWARE updates to WORK DECENT. iam not even talking PERFECt, i say DECENT. N97 out of BOX is not working properly due 128MB ram.

Works great, even with the auto rotate on. Easier with the phone open but either way it's way better than how I was trying to do it.

this isn't working for me at all. Did you shut off auto-rotate or something? I don't see your screen moving at all when you move the phone like that.
