I'm a veteran and I don't beg. All my friends are veterans and don't beg. Being veteran gives you an extra advantage when looking for a job in this country. My healthcare is free through the VA......but like any government run healthcare, it could be better. I have no complaints with America.

I would hardly call Portland a place to be proud of itself, Homelessness of the size of Portland is a symptom of serious problems besides Homelessness. Lackluster economy, the have and have nots in your face every second. A city that is small yet very segregated by economics. I would hardly call Portland a place that should be proud of itself, even though it could win a academy award for self congratulations.
