As a fan of both Vanessa Carlton and the Stones, i'm likely very biased, but I think the contrast between her sweet and very girly voice and the darkness of the instruments and lyrics makes the final product feel even darker, somewhat similar to how photographs of child refugees really bring home the tragedy of war.
Either way, this isn't her best performance of it. Check out the album version before you judge.

Oh my God! This is so much better than the studio version. Cool to hear V's voice even a little distorted like that... maybe she should try death metal xD

I don't understand what people have against covers. Obviously its one artist's tribute to another artist they probably admire. And contrary to popular believe Vanessa Carlton was never a pop princess. She was always more soft rock than pop with the classical influence.

@rmarino4471 Vanessa's more skilled piano player than Josh Groban. I love Josh Groban too as much I love Vanessa. In the end to each his own. I'd be bored to death with only Josh Grobans in the world or only Vanessa's in the world.

@darabloom9 shes talking into a microphone in a deeper tone. josh groban sings. lets be honest here

the stones version was about a guy at his girlfriends funeral. hence the "line of cars painted black" and "my love never to come back" but i suppose hers is a bout a dead boyfriend. unless she's is a lez...

I don't know xD
I think around 2002/2003, you can tell because her voice still sounds young unlike 2004 and to the present day when it sounds more mature
