Looking for FAFSA help? Here's a checklist of the documents you'll want to round-up in advance, so you're well-prepared when you sit down to file:
The students Social Security card - you want to make sure that that name on the Social Security card is the exact same name you list on the FAFSA - first name, middle initial, last name.
The student's drivers license.
Income and tax records for last year. Now I suggest NOT waiting until your taxes are done before you file your FAFSA application. If you haven't received your W-2 records, just grab your last pay-stub of last year and gather the year to date info. Then make your best estimation of the taxes you'll be paying.
And that income and tax information is for both the student and the parents.
Now if it applies, you'll need last year's untaxed income records. This could include Social Security, temporary assistance to needy families, food stamps, welfare or veterans benefits.
Round up a copy of your current bank statements - checking and savings - for both the student and the parents
Same thing for any investment accounts you might have - stocks, bonds, mutual funds, 529 plans, etc - once again for student and parents - and also any business and investment property information.
And finally, your alien registration or permanent residence card, if you're not a U.S. citizen
Now I suggest you keep copies of all of these documents in a folder. Because you may be one of the lucky ones selected for verification (the FAFSA application audit).
