Fed up with drugs infiltrating their communities, city residents are fighting back, using Crime Stoppers as their weapon of choice against criminals.

Anoymous tips to Crime Stoppers help stop, solve and PREVENT crimes. The anonymity of a Crime Stoppers tip in Canada is protected by the Supreme Court of Canada case law. January every year in Canada is Crime Stoppers Month, where programs across Canada celebrate their mandate.

A part of the Toronto celebration for 2012 was dedicated to clarigying the truth about Crime Stoppers. Below are a number of myths about Crime Stoppers.

1. That this a police-run operation. That is not the case, although it does run out of police headquarters. It is run by a board of directors made up of volunteers outside the policing community, although Det. Darlene Ross is the coordinator. She merely acts as a liaison between the board and the community.

2. That you can easily be identified. Call-takers have no call display and they never ask you your identity.

3. You have to testify in court. This is not the case. Most people are in it for the money. No true. Half the people don't even accept the reward money of up to $2,000. They do it because it is the right thing to do.

4. It's wrong to be a snitch. This is changing. The Crime Stoppers program wants people to know that being a snitch is the right thing to do because everyone in the community has a role to play in crime fighting, not just the police.
