BRYANT TO RECEIVE WOMEN IN NAACP AWARD FOR
$8.5 MILLION GRANT TO WASHINGTON PREP HIGH
Long time Los Angeles resident and retired elementary school teacher Onamia J. Bryant will receive a Volunteer Service Award from Women in the NAACP, Los Angeles Chapter, during its noon luncheon event on Saturday, October 9.
Bryant was honored her role in securing an $8.5 million Safe School Grant for George Washington Preparatory High School. The presentation will take place at the Radisson Hotel, 6161 W. Centinela Ave., Culver City. "Sterling Service Preserving our Legacy" is the theme.
I'm honored and thank the Women in the NAACP for choosing me for this award, said Bryant, 75, upon receiving acknowledgement. " I enjoy volunteering it helps to keep my mind active."
During her extensive career, Bryant taught at schools in Harbor City, Watts, Echo Park and Los Angeles. She retired in 1996 from Elysian Park Elementary school. She has supported the Exceptional Children Foundation School in South Los Angeles and has coordinated special events and activities for the African American Education Committee of UTLA. She also served as Vice Chair of The Black Education Commission for LAUSD.
"Another position I enjoyed was "Teen Reading Mentor Program" teacher at Maxine Waters Employment Preparation Center," said Bryant, who also briefly hosted an educational show on KPFK radio of the Pacifica Radio Foundation.
Bryant, a self-described "active senior citizen," currently is a docent for the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, where she helps host, instruct and direct children in schools from throughout Southern California. "I volunteer each year with the Christmas drive at My Friend's Place, an organization that helps homeless youth in Hollywood," she said. "I also serve as a member of the NAACP, Neighborhood Watch representative and consummate tutor and teacher to my great-grandchildren."
Bryant serves on the deacon's board at Bible Enrichment Fellowship Church in Inglewood and chairs the senior's activity group there as well. In addition to traveling with the senior throughout Southern California, she has traveled extensively worldwide. Hong Kong, China, Brazil, Togo in West Africa, the Caribbean Islands, Costa Rica, Canada and Mexico, are among her visits.
"I've also enjoyed this country's natural history while visiting the "Custer Battlefield" in South Dakota, the White House, New Orleans and Hawaii," notes Bryant. "I also stay active by taking line-dancing lessons, swimming, water aerobics and walking."
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bryant relocated to Los Angeles in 1959 with her three children. She remarried and had one more child. "Currently helping to rear two of my five great-grandchildren," she added.
Bryant earned a Multiple Subject/California Teaching Credential specializing in Language Development for California State University Dominguez Hills and Early Childhood Education certificates from Compton College. She is a graduate of North High School, Minneapolis.
