I think timing how long it takes the water to travel a known distance down the hull would be easier and more accurate. Or if you knew the distance to the water you could use the field of view of the camera and time it takes to pass from left to right.

Aww.. your $0 steadicam isn't working(I think)..well for this video... 'cause its kinda shaking and I think it will be better if its not shaking..

It shakes MUCH less than a handheld camera wo/tripod.
ALso, it's only shaking side-to-side! That's the big problem with $0 steadycam. (Go and build a DIY $14 steadycam with weighted crossbeam)

Most navy ships only do about 30 knots. I really don't think this guy could run 10 mph.
