By request, a highly abused audio processor is explained and demonstrated with this video. This portion covers master EQ. Part 2 will cover EQ for individual tracks.

  • Dude, I freakin' love the Dire Straits Money For Nothing "Loudness War" remastering demonstration. Why is that? The loudness war thing? I NEED to see/watch your compression video, been searching it. How can I view it? Great vids btw. I've been learning how to use the TT Dynamic Range Meter...can you PLEASE do a tutorial on how to use it for mixing. Spread the news!! Help end the loudness war & lets get back to hi fi!!

  • @pitolove71 Hey, thanks! Look for "why I don't buy remastered CDs" in my channel.

I don't really use metering when mixing. My monitors are calibrated so that -20dBfs RMS = 80dB SPL in the listening position. I pull out my Radio Shack SPL meter once and a while to make sure the level in the room is about 80dB C-weighted (or a little lower sometimes) and pay no attention to the meters in the software.

  • You say you don't have high/low shelving on that unit, but I see knobs labelled "high pass" and "low pass" with on/off switches. Aren't high/low-pass the same as low/high shelves?

  • @mutesolo Shelving filters will boost or cut everything above or below a certain frequency, by a certain amount. My console, for instance, can boost everything above 12KHz by 3dB or whatever I want. A low-pass filter, will simply chop off everything above a certain frequency. So if my Orban EQ here has a low-pass filter (AKA high cut) set to 4KHz, there will effectively be no information above 4KHz coming out of the unit.

  • i know absolutely nothing about why and how to adjust EQ. Could you do a vid with a thorough explanation?

  • @thejeckisamusic Well, the why to adjusting EQ stems from hearing mild imbalances in the spectrum, like if you hear one note that's consistently louder than all the others, you can use EQ to tame it. As for HOW, that's explained in this video and its sequel.

  • This guy, Wado1942, IS the REAL DEAL! No "visual eq plug-ins" to help you shape your sound. He's using his true talent, his ears. Much respect.

  • Unbelievably Helpful.

  • Thanks. I may eventually post a "complimentary EQ" video showing how to avoid having multiple spikes & dips accumulating across several tracks.

  • I just thought I would watch your vidie.

Your technique is similar if not identical to mine. I am not surprised but I don't think we have every actually talked about EQ method.

    Good clean information presentation, BTW.
