Stephen Bochco and Michael Cimino were among the writers of fx wizard Doug Trumbull's melancholy 1971 space odyssey, which has taken on belated luster in our globally steam-heated present. One of Bruce Dern's finest hours.
When I was a kid I used to wonder how the hell did they get the robots to move like that because I knew at that age (about 10) that robots cannot walk at current time (back then). Now we have Asimo, but even asimo is still in working progress.
Anyway. I'm glad I found this movie. It used to kind of haunt me. That feeling of 'cold space'. The feeling of emptyness and lonelyness.
@1andrewman1 That's the way movies were paced back then. Plus, tons of other shows had already done the "explore space" thing. Very few actually dealt with what this one did.
A very important film, and one that should be re-cut and re-released. All they'd need to do is chop the musical montage near the beginning.
I'm pretty sure Battlestar was using footage from Silent Running. I seem to recall something about Dykstra working for Trumbull on Silent Running (1972), and then using some of what he'd shot and transplanting it into Battlestar (1978).
i thought this movie wasent good and i will never watch it again cos it was boring i thought that the guy would be exploring planets and stuff like that not sitting in a crashed space station playing cards with robots

They almost named the robots Moe, Larry and Curly.

Bit of inspiration for MST3K as well. Check the ships and the jumpsuits. :)

The SFX budget was small, but it isn't about the FX it is the story and the acting.
It is a great movie, but the SFX could be redone.
GREAT MOVIE!!!!!
