Bay Area engineer Ugo Conti has sailed the world, but has always suffered from seasickness. A queasy stomach became his motivation to design "Proteus" -- a spider-like sea craft made for smoother sailing. He designed the Wave Adaptive Modular Vessel to cross the ocean while flexing with the movement of the waves. And it may change the way people take to the high seas.

  • I remember watching this show and eagerly looking forward to seeing wave piercing in action after all the talk... but no. Clip after clip show it driving around in flat water. Yawn.

  • The concept is brilliant but having been at sea in 40 knot winds, I can't help but think about the points of weakness - Do you think the hinges would holdup to getting belted by massive waves?...then again....if it does 50 knots, it could outrun storms pretty easily if it knows they're coming early.

  • that cockpit area needs a glass bottom

  • Extraordinary invention, I have been looking for an answer on to how to deal with rough high seas and extreme conditions, and this design is revolutionary. I wonder if hydrofoils would be useful to this boat .

  • Catch this film on the big screen at the 6th San Francisco Ocean Film Festival, February 19-22, 2009! More info at oceanfilmfest[dot]org.

  • Looks awesome - would've liked to see it out in some open seas (rough) to view it doing what it was designed to do.

    Love the modular design too.

  • wow thats a great invention and twist in sea travel its really great there is still innovation going around.
