This orchestral version is very rare, made by conductor Zoltan Kocsis. I think it's very well done, just as imaginative as Ravel's own orchestrations. The paintings are made by Gustave Caillebotte.

  • Which orchestra/record is this? It's just FANTASTIC!

  • @janpeterdegraaff This is Zoltan Kocsis himself directing Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the CD is called "Orchestrations by Zoltan Kocsis".

  • Oh ok one more time...!

  • I keep hitting the replay button.

  • This orchestration is brilliant. I can't even begin imagine trying to orchestrate such a piece, but the melody especially is done with such imagination.

  • Oh, that's good. I can't imagine anyone presuming to improve on Ravel's own orchestrations.

  • @ByzantineCalvinist If you mean Hungaroton Classic HCD 32106 your question is irrelevant. Kocsis orchestrated Fugue and Toccata only. The rest of the cycle is Ravel's own.

  • I think I found the recording you mean on amazon.com and amazon.ca. I don't know why Kocsis would want to re-orchestrate the Prélude, Forlane, Menuet and Rigaudon movements, if that is indeed what he has done. Ravel`s orchestrations can hardly be topped, I should think.

  • @ByzantineCalvinist I don't believe so, but it's on Amazon, and probably on Spotify.

  • @jonbashjonbash

Is this posted on youtube? I'd love to hear it.

  • Anyone not familiar should also check out Zoltan Kocsis' orchestration of the fugue; really clarifies the lines and is just ridiculously beautiful.
