If you you are 18 years of age, you get join the armed forces, but the legal drinking age remains 21.

Most people in the military today are between the ages of 18 to 22. With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan tens, of thousands of America's youth are being asked to kill and get killed, get wounded, maimed and generally be damaged psychologically for the rest of their lives. But when they come home, they are still not allowed to buy alcohol. This has to be one of the sickest, most twisted things I ever heard in my life.

These people are doing things no one should ever do. Frankly, I don't know how they do it. I don't care what anybody says, killing must be a horrible thing to carry out. Even if you cause is just, you are still taking something that doesn't belong to you. On top of that you are watching your comrades getting hurt or killed, not to mention fearing for their own life.

Isn't the least we could do is let these people enjoy their drink of choice when they come back?

I am not saying that we should let all people between 18 and 21 drink. I am sure that there is a really good reason why we have the age limit for drinking set at twenty one. So maybe we could just extend this to people who served or currently serving in the military. Obviously they have proven that they are responsible adults. If shooting people and getting shot at won't make you grow up in a hurry, I don't know what will.

Alternatively, we could leave the drinking age at twenty one while raising eligibility to join up to the same age. That would not only eliminate the this quite ridiculous double standard, but also allow young people to come into their own a little more. I am certain that even a few years would make a huge difference when it comes to the military's ability to coax them into something they might regret later on.

  • In Denmark, Europe, the legal age for BUYING alcohol and liquor, is 16. The legal age for drinking it is 0. The age for driving a car is 18.

I think it's a good idea familiarizing people with alcohol a good time before letting them drive, kinda to familiarize them with the effects if being under the influence of the wonderful thing that is alcohol.

  • I'm 20. I'm an Airman. I've been to Iraq.

I can't have a beer. If I did and got caught, I'm fucked. That is bullshit. Everyone fucking knows it. I have EARNED my fuckin' right to drink.

  • @spilledinsanity no drunk driving shouldnt be a huge ass fine it ould be like getting a speeding ticket 1 night in jail unless you hit someone

  • @bulletz4life

"everyone knows" derr derr, ah yes you know everything

the accidents were lowered when they made harsher punishments for drunk driving and that's fine. But saying the drinking age is reasonable is justifying an unfair law. Also, when an adults whos 18-20 drinks, instead of calling family of friends for help they know its illegal and try to get home stealthily, that leads to more drunk driving.

  • there is a very simple answer to this, although i completely disagree with the drinking age, the reason it is what it is, is because the majority of accidents with cars or violence happen with people between the ages of 18-25. This simple rule that people under 21 cannot drink helps prevent a SHITLOAD of extra car accidents, because everyone knows that a dumb teenager can get drunk and drive like a maniac.

  • How does a politician determine the maturity level of those he doesn't know? Someone who is 16 may be more mature and responsible than someone who is 22. The drinking age hasn't worked. It's done nothing but increase binge drinking.18 yr olds are exposed to alcohol in college all the time and the gov expects the drinking age to stop these people from drinking? All it does is fucks up peoples lives with charges and huge fines. the gov doesn't give a shit about me, why should they care if I drink?

  • Im in the united states navy serving as an aircrewman. Myself and my piers have to act with above adverage amount of maturity and discipline in order to perform our jobs. The only thing civilians are exposed to is what they see on the news. We are put in extremely dangerous situations during our jobs putting ourselves and our fellow crew in harms way on a daily basis. I think we have enough maturity and discipline to have a beer at the bar.

  • its not realy sick i think thats wrong word

  • definitlyyy stay 21 thered be so many car accidents if not

  • There you go you said it! If they are still immature DONT LET THEM IN THE MILITARY! they too irresponsible to drink but they are responsible enough to die! Holy Shit! read what you say!!
